The garment is a symbol of a royal coronation so we should treat it with that same level of respect. The temple promises that we can one day become kings and queens, priests and priestesses unto God, and the initiatory is the ceremony that foreshadows that royal and priestly coronation. In coronation ceremonies today, the king will lay aside royal robes and put on a simple white smock.
