Sheb Wooley had a career as a singer, songwriter, and actor, with his most famous roles including the hit novelty song "The Purple People Eater" (1958) and playing scout Pete Nolan on the TV show Rawhide (1959-1965). He was also known for a comedy country music persona, Ben Colder, and for providing the Wilhelm Scream sound effect for numerous films.
