In Greece, the Christmas spirit arrives by boat. Every 6 December, on Saint Nicholas Day, Greek families decorate their ‘karavaki’, a small boat representing their seafaring tradition and their hope that sailors will return safely in time for Christmas. Usually placed at the entrance of the house, the ‘karavaki’ also symbolises hospitality, a value that defines the Greek people.
