In 1887, Nellie Bly was just 23 years old when she faked ‘insanity’ in order to go undercover as a patient at a mental asylum in New York City. From the inside she was able to expose the terrible living conditions and patient neglect. Not only did her exposé cement her legacy as a pioneer of investigative journalism, she also raised awareness about #mentalhealth treatment, which led to vast improvements in patient care. Bly’s fearless work shined a light on women’s rights and mental healthcare r
