Dezember 1990, starb Aaron Copland, eine Schlüsselfigur der amerikanischen Moderne.�Sein „Appalachian Spring“ entstand 1944 als Ballet for Martha, denn Copland hatte dem Werk zunächst keinen Titel gegeben. Kurz vor der Premiere schlug Martha Graham den heutigen Namen vor – entnommen aus Hart Cranes Gedicht "The Dance". Inhaltlich hat er mit der Handlung des Balletts allerdings nichts zu tun.
